Connecting
the Dots
...
Connecting
the Dots:
Science
and spirituality appear to be becoming more and more harmonious while science
and religion as expressed by the fundamentalist Christians are very often
finding a parting on the ways. As we will explain in a moment,
the connection between science and spirituality is already producing
some completely unexpected results. Unfortunately, much
of the evidence is simply being denied and/or ignored by the most vocal
fundamentalist Christian leaders. Why? Because
the new information from science threatens many of the major illusions
that have been at the base of human social structures for
centuries. And as you well know, humans can tolerate almost
anything except change.
The leaders of present-day, fundamentalist Christianity are aghast at
any of the scientific findings because the overwhelming evidence is pointing
away from many of the stories that they and their predecessors have been telling for
centuries -- stories such as "God's Conception Magic Act,
"Man and God Are Separate," "God is a superhuman being
living in a place above the clouds called heaven," and that "Humans are Inherently
Evil."
Scientific
evidence is perceived as a real threat by the
ultra-conservative Christians because it threatens their power and
control. Symbolically speaking, their cash-cow is about to be put
our to pasture and their milking machine is about to be shut off. Here's
the ultimate blasphemy from the scientific evidence:
There is no evidence whatsoever
that tell us that whatever it is that humans refer to as "God," either,
desires, wants, needs, expects, demands, or in any way, asks to be
worshiped.
Far more appropriate response to
Source appears to
include:
a)
A sense of awe, wonder, and mystery,
b)
Gratitude toward and the appreciation of Source,
c)
The honoring and respecting Source,
d)
The honoring, appreciating, and respecting the creations of Source,
e)
Seeking to understanding how humans and physical reality relate to that Source.
f)
Asking how can one be of service to sacred mother Earth and to one's fellow
Earth-dwellers, be they human and otherwise?
The
very idea that God doesn't desire, expect, or demand to be worshiped is tantamount
to blasphemy, but consider this. At one time it would have been
considered blasphemy to suggest that humans not kill goats or sheep and
burn their bodies as a sacrifice to God. If you can conceive of
why we no longer kill and burn animals to appease and angry God, you also
understand why worship, as we presently hold it, is no longer
appropriate.
Now
What
...
Okay,
Now What?
Since
we have no knowledge of what that source actually is and how it functions,
humans are left with two alternatives:
1)
Continue to believe in the stories our ancient ancestors made up about what God
is and how "He" functions, or
2)
Examine the creations of source and to best of our ability offer hypotheses
about how those creations functions and how the studied-creations relate to the
source, itself. This process has two distinct parts:
a)
Examining the external world (including our human physical bodies
b)
Examining human consciousness and how consciousness controls our human, physical
experiences.
Present
Path
...
Continuing
Along the Present Path:
In
the name of God (and based on old religious beliefs), humans have murdered
millions men, women and children and engaged in some incredible
destructive behaviors, As a direct result our collective behavior,
we have gotten ourselves all too close to the brink of extinction.
We have destroyed our environment to the degree that continuing along the
present path is guaranteed disaster.
For
example: The fundamentalist Christians believe that the Earth is a one-time-only
stop along the path to heaven or hell, what happens to Earth is
irrelevant. This belief has has been used to justify incredibly
destructive human behavior.
Road
Less Traveled
...
The
Road Less Traveled:
As
an alternative to blind obedience to ancient fairytales, we can study the
evidence. And then based upon what the evidence indicates, open-minded
humans can make some best guesses about what God might be like.
But please be aware that this process is like trying to measure the height of a
flagpole by having no idea what a flagpole is and by seeing only its shadow.
All conclusions are theories, hypotheses, and best guesses.
They are open to change as new evidence becomes available.
What
Evidence Indicates
...
What
the Evidence Indicates:
The
evidence indicates that everything physical (including humans)
is/are a part of that unknown source we call God. The evidence indicates
that God and humans are separate and unified at the same time. For
example, your right hand and your left hand are distinct and separate and, at
the same time, intimately related to each other and a part of a grater
whole. The evidence points to the conclusion that humans are
co-creators with God -- co-creators whose
purpose appears to be to create a piece of heaven, right here on
Earth.
Resistance
to Change
...
Resistance
To Change:
The
problem for many people is that the evidence is at odds with what the
leaders of Christianity are telling them. Most believers in Christianity have been
taught that God is a superhuman being, living "out there" somewhere
above the clouds in a place called heaven; that He (God) controls human lives, demands
particular behavior; and if you don't comply with His rules, you'll be banished
forever to an incredible painful place called hell. The idea that
humans are eternal beings and aspects of God in physical form is so far removed for the average
Christian's
consciousness that it is rarely ever even considered as a possibility.
Possibilities
...
Consider
these Possibilities:
Could
six days of creation and the six billion years of evolution be
related. If you confine your investigation to tangible, physical
evidence, this idea is absurd, but when you step outside of time and space six
days and six billion years are one and the same thing.
Are
humans simply physical bodies or are we eternal divine beings living temporarily
in physical bodies. The overwhelming circumstantial evidence indicates the
latter to be the most probable truth -- that reincarnation is true.
When
one looks a bit more closely, one finds intimate relationships between things
that, on the surface, seem to be distinct and separate. Here are
some examples of
what science has discovered:
Everything
is related to everything
else. Ocean salmon have
a clear relationship with mountain-side forests. The survival of the aspen forests if Yellowstone park dependent upon
wolves.
A
human being is not his/her physical
body. In subatomic physics, the observer affects the
observed. Time is not a fixed commodity. Infinity
is not a whole bunch of
time. Physical matter is not
physical at all, it's made up of
energy.
The
list is all but endless and growing daily.
Biblical
Connection
...
The
Biblical Connection:
The
evidence does not support many of the claims made by the leaders
of present-day, fundamentalist Christianity. Even though the
evidence is often at odds with what the Christian leaders claim,
there is still is still much harmony between the scientific findings and the Christian
Bible. Here are some examples:
Ecclesiastes
11:5, RSV
"As
you do not know how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of the woman with
child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.”
(Also note the
same message in 1 Corinthians 2:14
and in Ecclesiastes 3:11)
Fundamentalist
Christians make all sorts of claims about
what God is, how He (masculine, of course)
functions
and what He wants humans to do or not
do.
In contrast, the
scientific evidence and philosophers
throughout history tell us that God is the ultimate
mystery of human life.
For example, the
scientific community tells us that
everything thought of as physical is not
physical at all -- that everything is
energy -- that energy is controlled by
consciousness -- that what consciousness
is, where it is, and how it functions is
still a mystery.
John
14:2
"In
my father's house are many mansions."
Science
has discovered that ninety-five percent of the known universe is made up of
"dark matter" and "dark energy," neither of which are perceivable by present-day scientific instruments. What
do you suppose in that ninety-five
percent?
Genesis
2:7
"And
the Lord God formed man of the dust of the
ground and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life; and man became a living
soul."
Fundamentalist
Christians claim that every time a human
sperm and egg unite, God steps in and, by an
act of instantaneous, supernatural, transcendental magic, He transforms every
uniting human egg and sperm into a
brand new, never-before-existing, separate, complete, eternal, sovereign, human being.
BUT...
1) The [Roman] Catholic Encyclopedia° cannot define what life is, where it come from,
what sustains it, or when it begins. 2) As you can see by the
Biblical quote above, the Christian
conception claim even contradicts
the Bible which
clearly states that life as a human being
begins at first breath.
3) There
is no scientific evidence to support the
conception-magic-act claim or the claim
that human beings are their physical
bodies.
John
14:12
"Verily,
verily, I say unto you, He that believeth
on me, the works that I do shall he do
also; and greater [works] than these shall
he do; because I go unto my Father."
This
Quote from Jesus is commonly paraphrased
as:
"Anything I can do, you can do
and
more."
(Also note the same message in
Psalms 82:6 and in Isaiah
41:23.)
There
is no scientific evidence whatsoever to
support the Christian claim that humans
are inherently evil.
2)
As you can see by the quote above,
the Bible says quite the opposite.
John1:1
“In
the beginning was the word, and the word
was with God, and the word was God."
John
1:1 is the Biblical version of The
Universal Law or Thought.°
The quotes regarding faith such as Matthew
17:20
support the Law of Thought.
There's
is much additional evidence and it's not
appropriate to include it
here. Readers are invited to
the Section titled: Relevant
Biblical Passages.°
The
Bottom Line
...
The
Bottom Line:
Depending upon your
interpretation of the evidence, you could say
that science is finding God and at the same time say the science is not finding
God. One thing science is doing is telling us that many long-held,
cherished religious beliefs have either no evidence to support them or that they
are strongly contradicted by the evidence.
This
leaves us with two choices:
1)
We can continue to believe in the stories our ancient ancestors made up about what God
is and how "He" functions, or
2)
We can examine the evidence and then based upon what the evidence
indicates, make some best guesses about what
God might be like. We can offer
theories about what the source of the
universe is, how it functions and our
relationship to that
source.
In
the in the mean time we (both collectively and individually) are still
required to make numerous irreversible, life-altering, decision base
upon one or the other of the above two choices. On which of the
above two choices do you choose to base your life?
